Albany State Lady Ram receives SIAC honors for outstanding performances

An Albany State University Lady Ram has been selected for basketball player of the week honors by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) after her outstanding performances in two games last week. Freshman guard April Thomas was named the SIAC’s Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season after helping to lead the Lady Rams to a 63-61 victory over Clark Atlanta University and in ASU’s 56-65 loss to Fort Valley State University.

A Bainbridge, Ga. native, Thomas scored 42 points, including 24 points against Clark Atlanta, to average 21 points. She also grabbed three rebounds in the two games, with three assists and two steals. Thomas leads the SIAC in scoring at 18.2 points per games, and leads all SIAC freshmen in free-throw percentage (.716), three-point field goals made (65), and three-point field goal percentage (.355).

Clark Atlanta junior center La’Quisha Lewis was named the Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after averaging 17 points and 17 rebounds to record lher seveth double-double of the season. Benedict College junior center Marcus Goode was named Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Paine Colelge junior center Allen Young was named Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week.

Goode averaged 24.7 points and 11.3 rebounds, including 31-point performances in victories over Tuskegee University and Stillman College for his third playerof-the-week honor. Young averaged 11 points and eight rebounds in two games last week.
The ASU basketball teams will play three back-to-back home games this week against Benedict College on Feb. 14, Paine College on Feb. 16, and Claflin University on Feb. 18
