The photo on the left is of Albanian John G. LaRoque taken during the civil war. The picture on the right is also of LaRoque many years later standing by Albany’s Confederate Memorial. It was decorated with flowers and portraits of Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee for Confederate Memorial Day, April 26, 1903. LaRoque raised more than 25% of the funds for the statue which was originally dedicated on November 13, 1901.The statue originally stood in the intersection of pine and Jackson streets before being moved three more times, first to the Municipal Auditorium, then to Oakview cemetery and then on to its current location on Philema Road.
