The Albany State University Lady Rams and Golden Rams will tipoff their 2011-12 basketball seasons Tuesday night! Both teams will face Valdosta State University in non-conference action at 7 p.m. The Golden Rams will make their season and home debut against the Blazers at ASU’s HPER Gymnasium, while the Lady Rams travel to Valdosta face the Lady Blazers at VSU’s The Complex.
Head men’s coach Chris Cameron said his men’s team is “back in the game” and ready to play for an SIAC championship. The Rams defeated Florida A&M University 68-64 in a pre-season basketball exhibition game.
“We’re off to a great start for the season. Our guys have worked really hard in practice and they are excited about the start of the season,” said Cameron, who enters his sixth season at the helm of the men’s program. “We picked up a good win against FAMU and I’m proud of their efforts and performance against the Rattlers. We hope to keep that same level of play and intensity throughout the season and bring home the championship title.”
Cameron, whose Golden Rams were 7-22 last season, will return six players from last year’s team, including senior forward Demarcus Blunt and senior guard Marcus Benitez, who each averaged 11.3 point per game. Cameron looks for senior guard Darein Chatman, who recorded a double-double 15 points and 10 rebounds against FAMU in exhibition, and junior guard Justin Wilcox, who scored 12 points, to make a big impact on the team.
Admission for the men’s game at Albany State is free of charge. Fans who plan to attend are asked to bring a canned food or non-perishable item to help less fortunate families during the holiday season.
In his 22nd season as head coach of the Lady Rams, Robert Skinner will lead his Lady Rams against Valdosta State Tuesday night in Valdosta. Led by senior guard and 2010 SIAC Newcomer of the Year Symone Wilkerson, the Lady Rams hope to get a big win against the Lady Blazers. Returning to the Lady Rams with Wilkerson, who averaged 12.7 points and 4.2 assists per game, will be sophomore guard Kourtney Alexander, who averaged 13.1 points per game; senior forward Breanna Fields and senior guard Danielle Colson. Last season, the Lady Rams were 17-12.
The Lady Rams will play the Georgia Southwestern State University Lady Hurricanes and the Columbus State University Lady Cougars in the first Peach Belt/SIAC Challenge, hosted by Columbus State at the Lumpkin Center on Nov. 26-27. Both teams will open SIAC play on the road against the LeMoyne-Owen College Magicians in Memphis, Tenn. on Dec. 1. The women’s game will tipoff at 5:30 p.m., with the men’s action starting at 7:30 p.m. Three other SIAC road games highlight the December schedules with competition against the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers in Tuskegee, Ala. on Dec. 5, the Claflin University Panthers in Orangeburg, S.C. on Dec. 15, and the Miles College Golden Bears in Birmingham, Ala on Dec. 17. The only home games of the month will be played Dec. 12, when the Lady Rams take on Valdosta State at 6 p.m. and the Golden Rams play Brewton Parker College Barons at 8 p.m. in non-conference action at ASU’s HPER Gymnasium.
