The Week of the Young Child will have its official kick off celebration at the Albany State University Pedestrian Mall at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 11. Albany Mayor Willie Adams is scheduled to sign a document proclaiming April 11-15, 2011 “The Week of the Young Child” in Albany, Ga.
The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration spear-headed by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Locally, the ASU Early Learning Center has organized events that highlight the importance and the joy of spending quality time with young children. These events are planned for preschoolers, kindergartners, and their parents, and seek to encourage a better learning relationship between young children and adults.
“We have invited all of the daycare centers from the surrounding counties,” said Jeannette Lucas, director of the ASU Early Learning Center. “We hope to have at least 200 children on campus for the celebration.”
Lucas also said she expects campus organizations and local elementary school organizations to participate in the celebration and other events during the week. Other activities planned for the week are:
- Wednesday, April 13: “Parent’s as Teachers” workshop. The program, free and open to the public, will be presented by Lucas at the ASU Early Learning Center at 6 p.m.
- Thursday, April 14: Family Talent Night will give families a chance to show off their talents and have a family fun-filled night. The showcase will be in Orene Hall at 6 p.m.
- Friday, April 15: Art Auction. Children will display their framed art throughout the center and participants will have the opportunity to bid on the children’s art. This activity will be held throughout the school day at the ASU Early Learning Center.
The community is encouraged to come to all of the scheduled events. For more information about the Week of the Young Child activities contact the ASU Early Learning Center at 229-430-2792.
