The Albany State University Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team returned to Albany as winners for the fourth consecutive year, after participating in the Atlanta, Ga. SIFE USA Regional Competition on Monday, April 4. The event was one of 12 SIFE USA Regional Competitions held across the United States in March and April.

SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. An annual series of regional and national competitions provides a forum for teams to present the results of their projects, and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. Teams are evaluated on the measurable impact they made economically, socially, and environmentally throughout the year.

During this academic year, the Albany State University SIFE team organized more than 10 outreach projects in the Albany community. The top three projects included “Fuelling the Future,” a program in partnership with the ASU Early Learning Center designed to help young children understand the importance of goal setting, nutrition, wellness and leadership; “Reduce Reuse and Recycle,” a program that challenged ASU students to become more environmentally conscience while decreasing their environmental footprint; and “Adopt a Business,” an effort to empower and enhance small businesses in the Albany community.

This year the ASU SIFE, a team of 75 active students dedicated more than 800 hours of community service that impacted the lives of more than 5,000 Albany constituents.  ASU SIFE’s focus is “To improve the lives of people all around the world, one project at a time” and has a team motto of “ASU SIFE…IT’S A BIG DEAL!”

SIFE is an international non-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders. SIFE is active in 40 countries, on more than 1,500 campuses and has 42,000 participating students.
