The Albany State University (ASU) Track and Field teams are set to start their 2011 outdoor seasons this week. ASU runners will compete in the Stillman Invite at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in their first outdoor meet of the season on Saturday, Feb. 26.
The teams, coached by Kenneth Taylor, will compete against some of the best runners in the nation at meets including the University of North Florida Spring Break Open on March 3-4; Florida A&M University Relays on March 12 and the Morehouse College Relays on March 17-19. The Lady Rams and Golden Rams will also compete at the Florida State Relays and the Georgia Southern Invitational in late March before making their home debut.
Mark all calendars for Saturday, April 2, as Albany State will host the 19th Annual Alice Coachman Invitational Track Meet at ASU’s Robert Cross Track and Field Facility and Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany, Ga.
The Coachman meet will feature world-class athletes from various track and field clubs in the Southeast. Several Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) teams, including Morehouse College, Benedict College, Clark Atlanta University, Tuskegee University, Fort Valley State University, Paine College and Stillman College, are expected to compete.
The annual track meet is held in honor of Alice Coachman-Davis, the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Coachman-Davis made history and gained international attention by capturing the high jump title with a record-setting jump of 5′ 6 1/8″ during the 1948 Olympic Games in London.
