Boy Scout Troop 115, chartered by the American Legion Post 30, took a trip last weekend to Camp Gallant in Lagrange, Ga.

Recently, the troop had studied land navigation, first aid, and search and rescue tactics. Throughout the weekend, the troop performed maneuvers through the dense woods searching for a 150-pound dummy. Once the troop found the dummy, different first aid scenarios were treated periodically through a six-hour time period. The troop carried the dummy through thick woods, steep inclines, and beach area stopping frequently to administer first aid.

The adult leaders prepared this trek for their boys so that Troop 115 was a readiness troop in case of emergency. Drills were performed at random times during the trip which included a night-time tornado drill where the boys woke up to an air horn and had to be in formation for reporting. The troop performed exceedingly well during the tornado drill with a 45-second reporting time.

“Readiness is an important part of Scouting,” said Scoutmaster Steve Owens. “We must always be prepared for anything that may come our way. By training these boys to do their best and always be on the lookout, Troop 115 will be ready for dangers in the future. I think the troop has definitely learned a lot throughout this weekend and I look forward to seeing more from these boys.”

Troop 115 is part of the Chehaw Council Boy Scouts of America. They meet every Thursday night at 7pm at the American Legion Post 30 on Gillionville Road.
