Albany State’s Ronnie Childs has been selected for football player of the week honors by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).
The senior wide receiver from Manchester, Ga. was named Offensive Player of the Week after his stellar performance against the Fort Valley State University Wildcats on Saturday, Nov. 6. Childs caught six receptions for 109 yards, including two touchdown passes, to lead the Golden Rams to a 12-7 victory over the Wildcats in the 21st Annual Fountain City Classic in Columbus, Ga. With the win, Childs and the Golden Rams captured the 2010 SIAC championship title, the team’s first since 2006.
Junior defensive back Jamarkus Gaskins received an honorable mention recognition after recording seven tackles, including five solos, and four tackles for a loss. He also had 1.5 sacks for eight yards and a pass breakup in Saturday’s game.
Childs, who was also named the HSRN Player of the Game after his performance last week, was named the National Player of the Week by FROM THE PRESS BOX TO THE PRESS ROW, a nationally syndicated sports radio talk show after his performance against Morehouse College on Oct. 23.
Childs is also one of four nominees for the national football fan poll award, presented by the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN). HSRN honors the top-performances on the gridiron for Division I FCS and Div. II each week. Undefeated at 10-0 on the season, the Golden Rams are currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Super Regional Two and No. 6 in the nation by the American Football Coaches Association.
