ATLANTA – A volunteer firefighter from Morven has won a crop of cash while visiting an old friend. Shelby Warren won a $400,000 top prize playing 20X the Money, a Georgia Lottery instant game.
“The guy at the store is someone I’ve known for a really long time,” the 31-year-old explained. “He had purchased a new car, and I stopped in to see him.”
Warren purchased his winning ticket at Quick Change #0060, 18374 Valdosta Highway in Valdosta.
“When I saw all of the numbers, I thought it was a joke,” he said. “I couldn’t say anything. I was dumbfounded, speechless.”
Even after other store patrons congratulated him, Warren still was in awe, he said.
The father of one 3-year-old son said he intends to pay off his mother’s bills.
And for himself: “I’ve been looking at a new truck,” he exclaimed.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $12.1 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.25 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
