Over the past 40 years, no team has dominated a series more than the Dougherty Trojans vs. the Westover Patriots. In fact, Dougherty won the first 12 meetings between 1970 and 1981, although Westover did close on two occasions; a 13-8 loss in 1975, followed by a 24-23 setback in 1980.
The Patriots finally beat the Trojans in 1982, winning that contest 31-12. That triumph was the first of three straight wins for Westover wins over Dougherty, as well as a span of four wins in five games in the series between 1982 and 1986. The Trojans won 20 straight games in the series until 2007, when the Patriots pulled out a stunning 35-34 win. That victory helped propel Westover to a berth in the Georgia High School Association Class AAA state playoffs. The last two meetings, though, have belonged to Dougherty, as the Trojans won 28-13 in 2008, followed by a 32-8 rout last season.
Both teams come into their GHSA Region 1-AAA opener coming off opposite results. Dougherty rallied in the final minute to edge Wilkinson County, 21-19, last week, while Westover will try to bounce back after losing to Early County, 21-14, both at Hugh Mills Stadium.
Two first-year head coaches will square off against each other for the first time in the Dougherty/Westover series. Jesse Hicks, who comes to east Albany from Baldwin High School in Milledgeville, Ga., leads the Trojans, while Octavia Jones will lead his Patriots onto the field for the first time against Dougherty.
