The Westover Patriots and Worth County Rams will meet for the 25th time on the football field in Sylvester this week. It’s been a series that has been dominated by Worth County, as the Rams have won 12 of 16 meetings dating back to 1990, with a pair of interruptions during that two-decade span (1996-97 and 2000-01).
Since the series resumed in 2002, it has slightly become more competitive, with Worth County winning five of the last eight meetings. The Patriots last win over the Rams came in 2008, with Westover pulling out a 38-34 victory.
Westover and Worth County first met in 1972, with the Patriots routing the Rams, 47-7, before the Rams responded with a 10-7 win a year later. After an 11-year hiatus, the series resumed in 1984, with Worth County winning five games over a six-year period, including a 39-18 triumph en route to a state championship season in 1987.
Both teams have had their moments throughout the 2010 season. Worth County followed up its season-opening 32-26 upset win over GHSA Class AA power Fitzgerald with a 49-12 rout of Turner County. Since then, the Rams have lost to Cook (28-14), Tift County (27-7), and Americus-Sumter (20-12). As for Westover, the Patriots lone wins so far this season have come against teams from Albany/Dougherty County, defeating Albany High, 21-7, as well as Dougherty.
Additionally, three of the last five games between the Patriots and Rams have been decided by eight points or less. Worth County has won three of those meetings (28-21 in 2005, 30-22 in 2006), while Westover won the aforementioned 2008 meeting by a mere four points.
Last week, the Patriots won for just the sixth time in 41 tries against Dougherty, pitching a shutout win over the Trojans at Hugh Mills Stadium. As for the Rams, they suffered their third straight loss since starting the season 2-0, an eight-point setback on the road to Americus-Sumter. While Westover will attempt to get off to a rare 2-0 start in region play, Worth County finds itself in a must-win situation to avoid a 0-2 start in GHSA Region 1-AAA action. To paraphrase the old saying, something must give when the Patriots and Rams square off in Sylvester Friday night.
