ASU newcomers players of week

Two Albany State University Golden Rams have been selected for player of the week honors by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Junior quarterback Stanley Jennings was named Offensive Player of the Week, and junior running back Robert Welton was named Newcomer of the Week after their stellar performances against the Kentucky State University Thorobreds on Saturday.

Both were playing in their first games as Golden Rams, Jennings and Welton led the team to a 42-12 season-opening victory over the Thorobreds and led the “Gold Rush” offense to 418 yards of total offense on the day.

Jennings, a Marietta, Ga. native, passed for 267 yards, completing 13 of 19 passes, for three touchdowns in the Golden Rams’ victory. He is the son of Marion Jennings and Stanley Jennings of Pompano Beach, Fla.

Welton, a Macon, Ga. native, scored two touchdowns on rushes of 22 and 24 yards for the Golden Rams. He rushed for 63 total yards on 11 carries with a long rush of 24 yards. He averaged 5.7 yards per rush. He is the son of LaTecia Moran of Macon.

Jennings, Walton and the Golden Rams will open at home on Saturday, Sept. 11 against the Clark Atlanta University Panthers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Albany State University Coliseum.
