Westover wins region
sports crown — again
For the fourth consecutive year and ninth time in years, Westover High School has won the Region 1-AAA All-Region trophy.
Points are accumulated for each school’s finishes in the region in each of 19 sports. The school with the most points at the end of the year wins the All-Region Championship. The award was presented last week to athletic director Harley Calhoun and principal William Chunn.
During the 2009-2010 school year, Westover won region titles in girls cross country, girls swimming, girls basketball, boys basketball, wrestling and girls soccer.
Cairo placed second in the region all-sports competition, followed by Perry and Peach County. Americus-Sumter is joining the region this year while Peach is leaving.
Darton signs first
international player
Kenyan Dorine Minala is not just Darton College’s first international basketball player – she also is the school’s tallest in history.
A 6-foot-6 center, Minala signed with Darton on Friday, filling a void on head coach Laura Blackwell’s roster by providing much-needed low-post defense. She transferred to Darton in the spring from Albany State University after competing for Jacksonville College in Texas.
She has a 4.0 grade point average.
“She is definitely a big asset to the program,” Blackwell said. “We are extremely excited to have her. She works hard in the classroom and I know that she will be able to transfer that classroom work ethic to the basketball court.”
