The Artesian City Car Club recently displayed their members’ old cars for the residents of the Palmyra Nursing Home on the facility’s front lawn. It was a very hot and humid, typical Albany summer day but that did not stop the residents from coming outside and enjoying the display.
Many of them said that they had cars similar to some of those shown and that brought back a lot of pleasant memories to them. I don’t know who enjoyed the afternoon more, me or them. I know that I, for one had a very good feeling about spending time with these special people who couldn’t get the smiles off of their faces all afternoon.
It was obvious that the Palmyra Nursing Home staff care a great deal for the people they serve by providing the opportunity to those who must, by necessity, spend a lot of their time indoors. The more activity such as this that can be provided, the better it is for their well-being. The staff cooled things down by providing ice cold tea and lemonade for everyone all afternoon as the residents and caretakers moved from car to car admiring the shiny vehicles. The cold drinks certainly helped make the afternoon much more enjoyable.
This is just one of the many activities provided by the Artesian City Car Club and one of the reasons that my wife and I joined this club. We are a very diverse club and are looking for additional members. So, if you are community minded and would like to join us in activities like this, please contact our president, David Dougherty, at 594-095, or any of our members and request a sign-up form. The cost per family is only $20 per year and is tax-deductible.
Besides displays like that Palmyra Nursing Home event, we do fund-raisers for local charities. So, if you’d like to join us, sign up soon and be part of our big classic car show that we hold at the Albany Mall each year in October.
