This is what Michigan State University fans chant at their basketball and football games and the white part is certainly appropriate this week that I am in the area. I put in an order for a couple feet of the white stuff prior to my arrival and by golly I got my wish.
In fact, it has been snowing in the Lansing every day since my wife and I got here and we got about a foot of it last night … and more is expected. Man, I love this stuff. When I left the Michigan area in 1986 and sold my snow thrower, I thought that I would never miss it.
All I wanted to do was to play golf in south Georgia and to enjoy the endless sunshine. Well, that was true for a number of years but now I miss that white, beautiful, slippery, cold stuff.
In fact, while here in Lansing, as soon as it started getting super cold these past couple of weeks, I couldn’t resist buying a new white and blue ski jacket along with a face mask, a couple beautiful stocking caps and some special earmuffs that are popular this time of the year.
I have always wanted one of those beautiful ski jackets but never wanted to spend the type of money necessary to get a really good one. This time, I broke down and did it. Man, do I love the jacket. I just wear a thin shirt underneath it and it keeps me toasty at temperatures in the single digits here.
Like a lot of people the past two weeks or so, I have been eating way too much and putting on a “little” weight so I am out every day walking in the neighborhood where my daughter lives. With that new jacket, I don’t need anyone (my wife) pushing me to get out of the house and pounding the pavement. I slap on that new jacket and off I go enjoying those big snowflakes that are slowly falling to the ground.
What a great sound that cold hard snow on the ground is as I walk on it with my new boots. Yes, I went out and bought new pair of waterproof, lace-up, leather winter boots, too. I may not get as much use out of all this snow and cold weather gear in Albany but it will still come in handy and the end of the football season sitting in the stands at those Deerfield Windsor games. I will now be comfortable unlike previous years.
Tonight, I am heading out to a high school basketball game in the area. I have already attended Michigan State men’s and women’s games and some high school games. Thus, I am ready to return to Albany in a couple days and get back to the Deerfield-Windsor games and their run to capture the state title this year.
