Bicycle club raises funds for Chehaw

The Education Department at Chehaw has received another generous donation from the Pecan City Pedalers. The local bicycling club held its annual fund-raising event, the Nut Roll race, raising $4,000 to donate to the educational and outreach programs at Chehaw.

This annual race takes place at Chehaw in September and has raised more than $20,000 in donations to the Education Department.

From purchasing equipment for the “Muckin’ Around the Muckalee” canoe program to a specialized hay wagon for the “G.N.A.T.S.” overnight program, the Pecan City Pedalers have been responsible for many improvements that could not have been made otherwise. This year the donation will go towards building new enclosures for the education animals.

“We are so fortunate to have their generous support in fulfilling our mission to inspire participation in the conservation of nature,,” said Jennifer Arledge, Chehaw’s Curator of Education.

Jim Anne Brett, president of the Pecan City Pedalers, says they chose to give their proceeds to Chehaw because it is an asset to the community that can enjoyed by all generations.

Featuring one of only two zoos in Georgia accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Chehaw also includes a BMX bicycle race track, 18-hole disc golf course, Wild Trail for walkers and runners and one of the largest playgrounds in the state.

Chehaw hosts special events throughout the year, like the Native American Cultural Festival in the spring, Swamp Stomp Summer Camps in the summer and Festival of Lights during the holidays. For more information, visit www.ParksatChehaw.org or become a Facebook fan at www.facebook.com/chehaw.
