PREP GAME OF THE WEEK
Dougherty vs. Monroe
By Mike Flynn
After starting the season 4-0 and allowing only 3 points in those victories, the Monroe Tornadoes have lost back-to-back games and now sit at 1-2 in region 1-AAA. Meanwhile the Dougherty High Trojans have won back to back contest and enter Saturday night’s match up 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the region.
A Dougherty victory will give the Trojans bragging rights for the city, and should ensure them a playoff spot. Last week Coach Charles Flowers dedicated to the running game and senior tailback Ezekiel Knowles gained 126 yards in a 32-8 beat down of Westover. The Trojan defense also forced five turnovers in the contest.
Monroe ran into a dominant Peach County squad and lost 31-6 surrendering more points in one game than in the previous five combined times two. While the final score may have been misleading, the loss makes Saturday’s contest even more crucial for Monroe’s playoff chances.
Domonique Reid put up 96 yards against Peach County, but special team miscues doomed the Tornadoes in an otherwise competitive game.
While a Trojan victory would give them a clear shot at the playoffs, a Tornado victory could create a log jam in the second tier of the region. In recent meetings, both teams have taken the opportunity to put up big numbers on their cross town foe regardless of the region issues at stake.
So far in 2009 the Tornadoes have lost to the top two teams in 1-AAA while Dougherty has topped Worth County and Westover. With much at stake, this annual battle is set for kick off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Hugh Mills Stadium.
