PREP GAME OF THE WEEK

Hometown showdown: Monroe-Westover

Staff reports

The annual grudge match between Westover and Monroe is scheduled for Saturday night at Hugh Mills Stadium. The Patriots will be fighting for pride while the Tornadoes will try to hold on to a possible playoff spot and city championship.

With starting quarterback Rashad Jackson nursing a bad leg, Westover has struggled losing three straight and by big margins. In losses to Crisp County, Dougherty County and Peach County, the Patriots have been out scored 94-24.

The Tornadoes had last week off after a tough 16-12 win over Dougherty on Oct. 10. Monroe is in a three-way tie for third place in 1-AAA. Since the Trojans and Worth County still have Peach County looming on their schedules, a win over the Patriots will almost certainly get Monroe in the playoffs.

Domonique Reed leads the Tornado rushing attack with 544 yards on the season. Larry Whitfield is the anchor of coach Charles Truitt’s swarming defense. Monroe is averaging 21 points per game, and allowing only 8.
