Outlook: ASU Homecoming One Dream, One Family, One Love

By   /   September 17, 2009  /   Comments

Some will say, “One Dream, One Family, One Love – haven’t I heard this before?” Others will ask, “Why the repeat?” But who will ask the most important question of them all, “Albany State University – how do they do it?”

How does a school founded 106 years ago by a man from Rhode Island manage to keep the love, the dream and the family alive?

The answer? By not forgetting who we are and what we are about. We are Albany State University, thus the reason we bring back the theme “One Dream, One Family, One Love.”

Great joy and pride are taken in the fact that scores after one man gave so much to witness his dream come to fruition, his legacy lives on today through the men and women who make up the Albany State community. With every Albany State Homecoming celebration, we remember the work and vision of Dr. Joseph Winthrop Holley, a man who dared to believe that the entire ASU family will achieve greatness.

Homecoming is always a special event. It is one that many are accustomed to and one that some will experience for the first time. Before we get wrapped up in the events and the entertainment and thrill of watching our Golden Rams lead us to another victory in a stadium that we can call our own, let us not forget what Homecoming is all about—a time to welcome back the great men and women who have graduated from Albany State and have gone on to make remarkable accomplishments and stand as pillars of success for the students of today and the brilliant minds of tomorrow.

It is because of the alumni that Homecoming 2009 is a reality. These one-time ASU students sat in class to gain knowledge, ran for Miss ASU, made their mark on the field, track, or court, and a host of other things too long to mention. For some it was just a few years ago. For others it has been a decade or two, but no matter whom the student or what the achievement, every person that received a diploma from ASU has contributed to the progression and sustaining of the university.

We welcome home the alumni who have not forgotten the dream. We welcome home the alumni who remained loyal and true to their ASU family. We welcome home the alumni who have not forsaken their love for Albany State University. For it is “One Dream, One Family, One Love.” A dream to succeed when all odds were against you. A dream forever to display confidence and dignity when asked, “From what school did you graduate” and boldly respond, “My alma mater is Albany State University.”

As ASU alumni, never forget the dream. As members of the ASU family, you have the charge to remain together despite life’s greatest adversities. Why such commitment and dedication you ask? Because there is no stronger glue to bind a family together than love. You all come back to see the university that you helped shape because of your love for the school. You wear ASU shirts and hats with honor. The alumni of the university stand as an emblem of the character and quality that ASU produces in its students. You cherish your past and look to continue to fulfill our future with the skills, knowledge and resources attained at Southwest Georgia’s premiere institution. How glad you should be that you have returned to the place where you formed lasting friendships, where you learned the lessons essential to your career and to life, and where you realized your potential.

As for the future alumni of Albany State – the torch has been handed to you. What will you do with it? What indelible mark are you looking to leave on this fine university? Are you working to realize your potential now so that when graduation comes you will be assured a return of your investment? The ball is in your court and the time is now. Don’t let your years here and the success you could have fall into the abyss instead of rising to your zenith. Matriculation and graduation from Albany State may only be one step toward success, but in a life with no shortcuts, every rung on the ladder counts. We are living in unstable times where not much is guaranteed. Why not guarantee your future success with an education from ASU? You came here for a reason, so make the most of it.

As for this weekend, you will certainly make the most of it. Make this Homecoming celebration different from all the rest as the old is blended with the new and good times are celebrated at ASU. Let the Homecoming festivities commence.
