Twenty years ago, Johnny Nether got in trouble bootlegging some pork skins at a pool hall where he hung out. He was trying to make a few bucks and accidently founded a business that turned into something he never imagined — that of pork skins cooked a big vat of grease. They might not sound good to the people who have never tried them, but take it from me, they are delicious. To me, they are almost like Lay’s Potato Chips. Once you start eating them, you don’t quit until you have finished the bag.
Johnny’s manufacturing plant is at 2121 Georgia Hwy. 256 on the east side of Sylvester. He and his wife’s company is called Nether’s Old Fashioned Brand Pork Skins Inc. They now have 20 full-time employees and this business is thriving even in this not-so-good economy. That is a great sign because once the economy turns around, their business cannot do anything but get better. They are already shipping their product all over the United States and beyond. To be doing that, you know that the product they produce has to be a good one. I have tasted their pork and I say that they aren’t good. They are great!
Johnny met his beautiful wife in 2001 on a trip home from California, although they both went to high school at Worth County. Anyway, Diane was headed back to California and Johnny convinced her to stay in Sylvester just one more night. Well, that did it! They really liked each other and for the next three months, they talked on the telephone every single night.
Evidently, Johnny was quite the salesman. When Valentine’s Day rolled around, Johnny popped the question and of course Diane said yes. They were married on June 28, 2002. They have no children together but Johnny has two girls and a boy from a previous marriage. One girl, Jermaka, is in college and the other, Juana, is part of the airport security in Albany.
His son, Jerico, drives a truck for a local company. Diane has two boys, Jamie, who is 28 and works for NBC-TV in California. He is in charge of the wardrobe worn by the characters of the Daytime Soap Opera, “Days of our Lives.” Her other son, Robert, works for the state of California as an inspector of soil. The Nethers are both very proud of their children.
So, look for the packages of Nether’s Pork Skins when you are out shopping and give them a try. I think you will find them to be an outstanding product. Thanks to the both of them for showing me around their factory and how they produce their tasty product.
