Mayor Wishy-Washy On Second Term Try

Adams says he will decline pay raise or donate it to charity

Last week, Mayor Willie Adams indicated during a public meeting he’s not seeking re-election; that is, if you take what he said literally.

He definitely said he wouldn’t accept a salary increase.

This week, Dr. Adams said in a public meeting that he will ask voters to elect him to a second term; that is, if you take what he said literally.

And now he says that if he accepts a salary increase, he would donate it to charity.

Either he is playing games, changed his mind during the week (hey, there’s nothing wrong with that), or he’s not telling the truth.

That is, if you take what Dr. Adams says literally.

And that doesn’t even count what he’s saying being closed doors. Without a doubt, it’s going to be a fascinating campaign season.

Last week, Dr. Adams said after voting to more than triple his salary that he either will not accept the pay increase or will not seek re-election. “I’m not pushing for pay myself, but I think it’s very appropriate for somebody that succeeds me get adequately paid,” he said.

On Tuesday, Dr. Adams took a different approach while advocating to his colleagues that they increase the mayor’s annually salary from $8,200 to $25,000 and their own salaries from $7,200 to $15,000. He says that when the pay increase takes effect Jan. 1, 2008, after the mayoral election this November, he either won’t accept the raise or he will donate it to charity – which, in addition is an admission that he’ll seek re-election, seems to be an oxymoron.

It’s the taxpayers’ money, and if Dr. Adams rejects the higher salary, he’s a bigger man for it. But if he donates it to charity, he’s accepting the raise; that is, unless he polls the constituency on which community service organization should be the beneficiary of the taxpayers’ gift.
